UK CEED's 21st anniversary celebrations culminated in a guest lecture by Lord Oxburgh on 11th May at the RSA. The lecture, attended by nearly 200 invited guests, was entitled "Hard Times or Best of Times? Why Climate Change is an Opportunity and Not a Threat for Business". It focused on opportunities for business to both address climate change head on and also to build their businesses by providing some of the solutions to this formidable challenge. The lecture was followed by a discussion chaired by Lord Jenkin of Roding, the Environment Minister at the time of UK CEED's foundation and later one of its Board members.
eWell-Being Awards 2005 Independent Newspaper Supplement

Launched in November 2001, the eWell-Being Awards are the first national awards programme to identify and recognise those organisations that use information and communication technologies (ICT) to deliver environmental and social benefits. The Awards, now in their fourth year, have been developed by UK CEED's SustainIT initiative and are supported by BT, Brother, IDEA and the Independent newspaper. This year, for the first time, the Independent was the National Media Partner for the Awards and published an Awards supplement in the Independent in March 2006. The supplement can be viewed in pdf format by clicking on the link above. Last year's Guardian Awards supplement is also still available as a pdf download (243Kb). Ecotrade Centre Final Report

This is the final report of UK CEED's WRAP-funded R&D project aimed at establishing a pilot construction and demolition waste recycling facility. The facility acts in a similar way to a civic amenity site but is aimed at SMEs producing waste as part of construction and demolition activities. At present such traders are unable to take advantage of recycling facilities at civic amenity sites and usually would send all their waste unsorted to landfill via waste carriers. The new facility allows relatively small amounts of waste to be collected and 'bulked' with other wastes to produce better economies of scale.

The Economic, Environmental and Social Impacts of Conferencing at BT, SustainIT's 2nd survey

SustainIT and The University of Bradford carried out research into the benefits conferencing is delivering at BT and found that, on average, each avoided meeting saves a minimum of £432 in travel costs, accommodation fees and people's unproductive travel time. This amounts to savings of over £128m in the past year alone. Conferencing also generally requires less time investment in terms of participation. Sixty five per cent of BT users said their last call lasted less than an hour, making it easier for busy people to attend, and ensuring minimal draw on precious resources.
The Economic, Environmental and Social Impacts of Cornwall's actnow Project

Actnow is a public-private partnership which aims to promote economic development in Cornwall through the use of broadband technology and ICT. The partnership, in collaboration with project partner BT, recently commissioned UK CEED's SustainIT initiative and the University of Bradford to conduct a survey of the impacts of broadband on businesses in Cornwall. The survey received 433 responses from actnow's business customers. The results show broadband is benefiting enterprises, individuals, the Cornish economy, society and the natural environment.

Exploiting the Value of Construction Waste

This DTI-funded Partners in Innovation Project sought to:
- Identify waste arisings from construction and demolition (C & D) companies
- Encourage separation of material streams
- Seek to divert the material streams from landfill by identifying recycling routes
- Identify the necessary changes in practices and procedures needed to achieve such diversion
- Raise awareness locally and nationally amongst C & D companies and waste service suppliers of the scope for, and financial benefits of recycling the waste
The research focused on current practice and procedures within three key sectors: the Construction and Demolition (C & D) Industry; waste management service providers; and reprocessors
Arisings, Collections and Handling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Peterborough

In advance of implementation of the Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive in 2004, UK CEED was commissioned by the European Recycling Platform (HP, Sony, Electrolux, Braun) to identify best practice options for collecting, processing and remanufacturing/recycling these items in Greater Peterborough and its rural hinterland. To achieve this aim the project set out to analyse data on WEEE arising in the Peterborough area and how the costs of processing and remanufacturing/recycling activities may be most effectively allocated between different elements in the supply chain. The project also aimed to assess the role of social enterprise in such markets.

Sustainable Teleworking (Sustel): Understanding and Managing its Economic, Environmental and Social Impacts

SUSTEL is a two year research project on teleworking financed by the European Commission's IST initiative. It involves collaboration between seven partners - Avanzi (Italy), BT (UK), Danish Technological Institute (DTI), Empirica (Germany), Telewerk Forum (Netherlands), University of Bradford (UK) and the project coordinator, the UK Centre for Environment and Economic Development (through its initiative, SustainIT). The project aimed to:
- enhance understanding of the economic, environmental and social impacts of teleworking
- assess the extent to which the impacts of teleworking change over time
- identify ways in these can be influenced by organizations and Governments
- develop tools and guidance materials to enable organizations to evaluate and optimize the sustainability of teleworking initiatives.

Delivering Resource Productivity: the Service Solution

Undergrounding Overhead Electricity Transmission Lines

UK CEED has completed a project designed to produce an up-to-date and authoritative analysis of the scope for placing overhead electricity transmission lines underground. The project was carried out for Friends of the Lake District and updates a previous UK CEED study by providing up-to-date information on relative costs, 'best practices' in undergrounding and new strategic arguments to influence action within the electricity industry. Water Framework Directive Leaflet

UK CEED has produced a new leaflet for the Environment Agency designed to introduce the EU Water Framework Directive to a wide audience. The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), the most significant piece of European water legislation for over 20 years, is set to overhaul the management of the water environment in the UK. The aims, practicalities, time scales, implications for business and industry, and implementation of the Directive are summarised in this leaflet.

Reconvening of Consensus Conference to Consider DEFRA's Consultation Paper: Managing Radioactive Waste Safely

In May 1999, UK CEED was responsible for organising and managing the UK National Consensus Conference on radioactive waste management. This involved a panel of 15 citizens considering the key issues over a period of several months and culminated in a high profile public hearing and a report to Ministers. In 2002, DEFRA asked UK CEED to reconvene the panel in their capacity as informed members of the public to consider the consultation paper: Managing Radioactive Waste Safely, which was issued by DEFRA and the Environment Departments of the Devolved Administrations. This report contains the unabridged response of the panel.

An Assessment of the Environmental Impacts of Tourism in St Lucia

Following the successful completion of the Seychelles study, UK CEED was commissioned by BA and BAH, with the support of the St. Lucia Tourist Board, to undertake a second destination audit in St. Lucia in 1997.
